Advocacy
Project Autism of St Johns, Inc. wants to help local families affected by autism. When given the diagnoses it’s important to know what to do first.
- Early intervention or “Early Steps” if your child is under 3 years of age. If over 3 contact your local school district.
- Social Security Disability office. You might be eligible for monthly payments, Medicaid or both.
- Agency of Persons with Disabilities (APD). The APD provides assistance in identifying the needs of people with developmental disabilities for support and services. Although there is a waiting list at this time, this may be a valuable resource for your child in the future.
- Research interventions to find one that best fits your family. (Therapies, alternative medicine, etc.)
- Find out what/if any financial assistance might be available to you. There are numerous grants and help offered from certain insurance companies.
- STAY INFORMED! There is always new information available. Search the internet for updates on new medical treatments and therapy. Because this is a spectrum disorder there is often numerous treatments and it’s not “one size fits all”.
- Get involved! The events that we host are meant to help your child learn and interact within their environment. With the support of other parents and caregivers we hope to provide a way for your child to learn how to behave appropriately in public settings. We understand that it is sometimes a daunting task to take children with autism out into the public. However, the benefits of these outings far outweigh the inconveniences. JUST GET OUT AND HAVE FUN WITH OUR HELP. The more we get our kids out of their “comfort-zone” the easier it will be for them in the long run.
Autism Help Organizations and Providers
Project Autism does not endorse any specific organization. Below we have compiled a list of providers in our area and nationally that might be able to help you navigate the world of autism. There are many therapist, doctors and alternative means that people can use to treat autism. Not all treatments work for every individual so it’s important to do your research and consult your physician. This information is to get you started on the road to recovery.
